August 18, 1916 - The Battle of Verdun was fought between France and the German Empire and ends with a French victory, in which the French repulsed a major German offensive. It was one of the longest, bloodiest, and most-ferocious battles of World War 1.

Battle of Lützen - Significant battle of Thirty Years' War - Swedish and Saxon forces defeat the Holy Roman Empire, at cost of the death of Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus.

The Soviet Red Army launches Operation Uranus against the Germans in the Battle of Stalingrad, ultimately encircling a significant portion of the Axis forces, turning the tide of the battle in the Soviets' favor.
