I've lived here for 5 years, but previously lived in Africa and India. Luckily I was friends with a lot of windbags so I picked up the accent quickly.

Holy shit I could never tell if I wasn't told. I know peeps who've lived here for like 20 years but retain their accent. Was it by happenstance by being around people who love to talk a lot or an effort to lose the accent? I think I read somewhere that folks unconsciously change their speaking patterns based off their surroundings.

My friends just talked and talked and talked so eventually i just picked it up. I tried changing it as well because my friends kept making fun of the way I would say vowels.
