Yeah I'd do it. The idea of dying on Mars sounds better than dying from some BS on earth... Sure I'd lose internet access...but I guess if I pirate/bring games along that'll help stave off some level of boredom before meeting my demise.
The trip there would be fun too! Silence to read, read, read. Oh yeah. As for doing stuff there for the sake of humanity, sure I guess. Doubt I'd be the most efficient though.
No one ever said you'd have more supplies than what you've brought from Earth. For that matter no one ever said you'd last there longer than a week. You're just offered a ride
Mars sounds like a horrible place to live. Something like a cross between the worst climates on Earth - hot, cold, dry, stormy. No Internet access. Weird, probably crappy food. Maybe no sports even.
This is a question my friends and I have talked about and like to ask other people, it's an interesting one!
I usually go with the assumption that there will be communication with earth (maybe not fast / instant internet) and that there are good chances of survival.
My general feeling is I probably would if (like I currently am) I didn't have kids or a family that depended on me. It's a chance to go down in history and do something truly unique and extraordinary that few others would get to do. And that contributes to mankind as a whole.
On the other hand, there's tons left to see and.experience on earth. More than any one person can see or do in a lifetime. And tons more people to meet.
One major factor would be how many people we went with as well. How big of a society would there be? How many different people to interact with and make friends with?
