My RL work history is really weird. I just do whatever work gives me money. I'm a nerd for everything, kinda like Tim Ferriss.
I have been:
A research assistant - discovered how fucked up and corrupt research can be, which gave me a lot of skepticism for science later on. Let's say you can alter research results based on how poorly you collect data, and you can pay incentives to get people to unconsciously collect data the wrong way.
Professional lab rat - econ dept in uni did experiments. We were given cash based on how well we did those experiments. So there'd be 4-hour scenarios similar to P&W but you get real money based on game score.
A barista and cook - quit my job to start a cafe. Made double income immediately. Then got cheated by everyone, shut down the company, and blew all the profits on legal fees. I really geek out on food science and coffee, so ask me anything on that.
A photographer - on doing our menu, I crammed a lot of photography classes into a week. So I did photography for a while. Was decent money, great work hours, but the market was crowded and it didn't have real career potential.
A baby sitter - long story. Almost started a company on this but the economics sucked bad.
A private tutor - also a long story.
A programmer - programming is really good money in this mobile era and currency conversion rate is awesome. I do web and apps. What sucks is that everyone wants to clone Facebook or YouTube and only have a budget of $10k or so.
I also sold software to gov (we did parking ticket tech and city council management software). What Chris said about gov stuff is similar. Big big money but horrible paymasters. 4 years on and still only got 1/3 of the money they promised.
A professional blogger - I write on food and soccer. Pay is about as good as programming.
A startup CEO - Long story. If I give exact details, you guys can stalk me easily
They say a CEO is very much a learn-on-the-job thing. I think it's awesome that games like CN gave me the experience of leading like 300 people, without being able to pay monetary incentive, and having things blow up everywhere.
