So you're starving you haven't eaten in two weeks your in the middle of nowhere surrounded by strangers no other life in site and rescue could be more than a month away, it turns out 2 of the strangers ,a young couple, had stashed much of the food your group had so they could secretly eat a meal everyday and ate the last of the remaining food just a couple of days ago, they are apprehended and brought before the group for punishment.

You hear whispers around the group everyone is in agreement "we need to eat".

Do you join them?

Disappointed there isn’t an ‘I choose to brutally murder’ them option or a ‘Slice little bits off them so the rest of their flesh doesn’t rot’ option.

This is a case you have 2 options to live. Leave the group or be eaten. Or join the ones doing the eating. Besides everyone knows people taste like chicken..........

By killing and eating a cannibal, is it cannibalism or self-defense and survival? (Based on the premise that cannibalism is a lifestyle choice much like veganism).

It would be cannibalism because you're still eating a member of your own species.

But the question isn't asking you to eat a cannibal it's asking if you would join in with the soon to be cannibals or choose to starve to death instead.

In this instance no!

I have this irritating habit of getting lost on some tangential thought though, hence the slightly ‘off the mark’ first response.  However I do  think cannibal’s are misunderstood...... for starters the word ’cannibal’ has become a label totally loaded with negative connotations that we just throw around everywhere these days, like what does it even mean???  That a loving parent can’t feed their children a nutritious meal that also is of great cultural significance?  Who are we to judge them for indulging in a cultural practice, probably handed down to them from generation to generation??  I bet they think we’re a right bunch of gross weirdos for eating bacon or some form of leaf!!  Maybe this misunderstood cultural practice has inspired many common concepts that we all are familiar with, including that of putting ones foot in ones mouth, to live hand to mouth, biting your tongue, or chewing your ear off.

I think it important to keep your head in these matters, to not jump to a popular conclusion based on some label, and to not roast people for their cultural and other lifestyle choices.  On another note, if a cannibal identifies as a vegan, who are we to deny him/her/other that right.

We've had legitimate cannibal tribes not too long ago, where it was a respectful part of some funeral ritual. But like incest, the reason we have a hard wired disgust for it is because it leads to bad things. Think Corona is bad? Try Kuru. It's why we don't eat rats, bats, dogs, and... I'm not sure about organs.
