Of Capital Punishment

Do you think Capital Punishment as it is right now is too liberal in its use?

I believe there are some crimes thatd justify Punishment, but I dont believe there is a society that is capable of consistently judging which situations these are.Ā  Until we can (1) limit Punishment to these very specific cases without a chance of expanding it depending on who's in office and (2) eliminating mistakes in judgements,Ā  it is better to not have Punishment

I think there may be times it’s ā€œjustifiedā€, but it’s incredibly expensive and doesn’t really make sense to implement. I think data shows it’s not a good deterrent as well. You can’t really make it less expensive since with something as irreversible as the death penalty you need to go through a very lengthy process to make sure you have the right person and they could merit capital punishment.Ā
TL;DR, even if it might be justified it doesn’t really make sense to have on the booksĀ

From a philosophical/moral standpoint I think capital punishment absolutely justifiable.Ā  However in terms of its practical application, I think humans are too flawed to mete it out appropriately.Ā  Something about being between a rock and a hard place.....

I’d agree with PSB, primarily concerned about being able to pursue this without a doubt of guilt. The cost to tax payers is also a burden as these cases wind up with significantly more appeals.Ā
Ā

overall it’s likely not worth it, and life imprisonment is a better option. Of course, we also hold too many people in prisons too.Ā

Yes.Ā

There are some crimes that should not be redeemable. I'd argue that the way they're handled has lead to their continued activity and depravity. (Sexual assault on a minor/anything pedophilic/any acts of violence on a minor).Ā

I am that hardline type on it. I must admit, my view is narrow on that area having had to have dealt with it personally in my childhood.

Even if we could address all the very valid concerns mentioned above regarding the certainty of guilt, I would remain opposed to capital punishment. Capital punishment is an act of revenge, not a deterrent. While it may bring some measure of comfort to victims and their families, I am of the view that states should not be in the business of deciding which of their citizens are allowed to live and which ones must die.
