Positive voting is generally described as voting for a candidate or party.  Negative voting is generally described as voting against a candidate or party.  For those of you who vote - and I beseech anyone who doesn't vote to stay clear of the conversation - do you generally vote for someone or against someone when making your choice?

Positively. They they're the ones who appeal to me the most other than the rest. Just because I don't like this one candidate doesn't mean I'll vote for the other. I might as well just abstain.

 
I believe that leaders should be picked for unusual strengths and not the one with the least weaknesses. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find leaders who are actually good these days, and nobody decent wants the job.

 
my politics have evolved from center left in 08 to being quite removed from the spectra represented by any candidate with a serious chance of winning, so the answer has changed over time. Bernie would have been an exact match in 08 but after the Bush admin, I did feel strongly that Obama would be effective and didn't really hate McCain as much as I do these days. 12, I was more worried about what the GOP would mangle if they got in charge and didn't really expect Obama to make any more great leaps. 16 was of course all about paying little attention to the unsavory characters alongside me trying to hold Helm's Deep against the Uruk-Hai

locally I do tend to vote positively as I know many of the candidates personally, though a few of them I know are turds so I vote for literally anybody else to keep them off the Board of Ed, etc.

 
Voting for candidates positively is not always pragmatic, but it leads to a healthier overall democracy, so I vote positively 100% of the time.

 
In the elections I've voted in there's been two real options, and with two options there's no difference. It's like asking if you heat up a room by making it less cold or by making it more hot.
