What was the best choice for the UK in their referendum on EU membership?

As I understand it, the EU is supposed to be an economic power-union to primarily benefit the member nations by increasing communication and economic freedom for citizens underneath the EU banner.

[If that is wrong,  I beg of the knights to not respond to anything beyond right here and correct me. I want to have a proper understanding of the EU so that I may form a proper conclusion on my own, rather than simply believing someone else's. However, if that was right, please continue reading and respond. ]

Therefore, I believe the EU should remain strictly that, an economic pact, and exclude itself from a multinational political agenda under the pretenses of economic growth and development.

OR drop the guise and just change the open intent of the economic union to fully and transparently embrace the European Confederation of States that they appear to already be pushing. If they want to be a multinational governing body that dabbles in the political sides of things, I don't care as long as they are honest about it. And should they go this second route, why not bring the World Court, or European Court, or however they call it, under the same banner? Judicial system, economic authority, and political power all under one flag. Why not?

I personally, if you cannot tell, am in favour of small government. In most cases I can be satisfied with a massive, corrupt, or in any other way "bad" government as long as they are mostly transparent. Not honest, but visible. I want the EU to do what it says it'll do and stop the excess or change what it says it'll do and keep up business as usual. That's it.

Given one of the debates against Scottish Independence was that they would no longer be in the EU I found the outcome hilarious for the Scots. I also was incredibly amused the English and Welsh choose to cut off their nose to spite their own face, I've keep a close eye on their politics for sometime and it was a masterstroke for Farage and Johnson (until his good friend Michael Glove betrayed him).

Also the memes that ensued were amazing.

Scotland's independence referendum barely lost before (2014 was it?...). And that was after the EU told them that they would be booted if they left the United Kingdom.

So, even with that threat of being kicked from their much-loved EU hanging over their head like a big axe, they still almost severed ties with the UK. Is there anyone who thinks that a new independence referendum for Scotland, to stay in the EU would lose if it happened today? They can literally have both great things they desire with one popular vote.

I really would like to hear both sides on this issue as well if anyone has more information.

Oh, they'd most definitely get enough votes in a new independence referendum now. I don't think there's a lack of will among the Scottish people to make independence happen, but I don't know how accommodating the EU will actually be if they were to "win" such a vote. The Spanish government has already spoken out against the possibility of Scotland remaining in the EU if they gain their independence, which everyone can obviously see is because they're afraid that if they let the Scottish leave the UK and stay in the EU, the Catalans or maybe even the Basque could do the same. Basically that means that if they get independence, they'll be kicked out of the EU and will have to negotiate their way back in, which could take a long time. There are a lot of separatist movements in Europe and I think a lot of European governments are worried that they'll open the floodgates for them by allowing even one separatist movement to succeed.

Here's a map of active separatist movements in Europe today, as you can see there's quite a few (though their popularity varies):
